What is the best type of litter for your cat?

Choosing the best type of litter for your cat may depend on several factors, including your cat's preferences, sensitivity to odors, ease of cleaning and environmental sustainability.

Here are some common types of cat litter and their benefits:

Clay binding sand (bentonite):

  • Advantages: Forms solid lumps when wet, making it easier to remove dirt and helping to keep the box clean for longer. It is effective in controlling odors.

  • Disadvantages: May produce dust, which can be a problem for cats (and humans) with respiratory problems. It is not biodegradable.

Silica sand (crystals):

  • Advantages: High absorption capacity, effectively controlling odors. It needs to be changed less frequently compared to other litters.

  • Disadvantages: Some silica litter can be hard on cats' paws. It is not biodegradable.

Ecological sand (based on wood, corn, recycled paper):

  • Advantages: Biodegradable and environmentally friendly. Many types have good absorption and odor control capabilities. Less dusty and may be safer for cats with respiratory problems.

  • Disadvantages: May be less effective at forming clods, which can make cleaning difficult.

Non-caking sand:

  • Advantages: Generally cheaper. Some versions can be made from natural and biodegradable materials.

  • Disadvantages: Does not form clods, which can make it difficult to remove dirt and require a complete change of sand more frequently.

Scented sand vs. unscented:

  • Advantages of scented sand: It can help mask unpleasant odors.

  • Disadvantages of scented litter: Some cats may not like strong smells and may avoid using the litter box. It may also cause irritation in sensitive cats.

Biodegradable or Clumping?

Some brands we recommend:

  • Ever Clean: A popular brand of clumping litter with good odor control capabilities.

  • Cats Best Öko Plus: An ecological option, made from plant fibers, biodegradable and binding.

  • Sanicat: Available in several versions, including clumping clay and ecological options.

When choosing litter, it can be helpful to try different types to see which one your cat prefers and which one works best for you in terms of odor control and ease of cleaning.
